This page is about the character. For the anime episode, see Episode 11.
Rem (レム) is a maid in service of Margrave Roswaal L. Mathers alongside her sister, Ram. She is one of the main supporting characters of Re:Zero, with major roles in Arc 2, Arc 3, and Arc 7, and a supporting role in Arc 8, Arc 9, and Arc 10. During the first half of Arc 2, she was the secondary antagonist.
Born the younger twin of Ram, Rem, having an inferiority complex, was attached to and only relied on her sister, caring for no other. Following her sister after the destruction of her home with the Oni Tribe, she became a maid of the Roswaal Manor, working hard to bear the burden that her sister no longer can with the intent of becoming her horn in her place.[5] However, she began to open up after Natsuki Subaru's arrival to the mansion, falling for him. At the end of Arc 3, she had her name and memories eaten by Lye Batenkaitos and subsequently fell into suspended animation. She later awoke at the end of Arc 6 bearing amnesia.
Appearance
Rem has medium-length sky blue hair that covers her right eye, large light blue eyes, and young features. She also has hair clips towards the left side of her hair, a flower-shaped ribbon on the same side of her hair, and a maid hairband. She looks nearly identical to her sister apart from her hair, eyes, and ribbon coloring. She usually wears a maid uniform, and since her chest is slightly larger than her sister's, she secretly changes the measurements to hide it. She has a uniform made for cold times, which has warmer cuffs around the wrists and covers her shoulders, and she also has one that she wears for her days off, that has more black than white, covers her shoulders, has shorter sleeves, and is closer to being a regular dress.
In Arc 6, Rem was dressed in a long-sleeved pink dress with white frills at the hem of the long skirt, pink boots, brown corset with three belts (two in the anime), black leggings, and a pink cloak to protect her from the sands of the Augria Sand Dunes. She continues to wear this uniform until her return to Lugunica.
When she was young, she wore a white kimono and a pair of zoris, a native dress of the onis, and her hair was styled the same as in the present day.[6] After joining Roswaal Manor's staff, she began to don her maid uniform.
In the Sloth IF side story, Rem had grown her hair out long, had a flower shaped hair piece on her head, and wore a white kimono.
Personality
Rem is a competent, loyal person who always tries her best. Initially, in public, Rem is someone who maintains an emotionless expression, not displaying feelings like sadness or anger to maintain formality. She speaks politely to others, even if she dislikes them internally. Additionally, she possesses a sharp tongue and can unknowingly say blunt or critical things to the people she interacts with. While calm on the surface, in intense situations, Rem often gets tunnel vision and locks onto a singular objective. She tends to try to do everything on her own, bearing the burden of everything on her shoulders. Initially, from her perspective, only Ram and things directly related to Ram were important. This leads Rem to make rash decisions to protect her community, without needing to think twice about the situation. Working at Roswaal Manor, she also holds respect for its master, having been thankful for his actions towards demi-humans.[7] More than anything, due to the way she grew up, Rem harbored excessive feelings of attachment, gratitude, and respect towards her older twin sister, Ram. Because she was always alone, her sister's care became a source of comfort, yet at the same time, something that caused her to feel as if she was suffocating.[8] She is fully aware of how extraordinary her sister is, which she looks up to her for, but at the same time, not being able to understand the things that she can have made her feel worthless.[9] Throughout her life, she constantly put herself down while propping her sister up, which, combined with the fact that she was born with one horn and was significantly weaker than her brethren, has led to an inferiority complex, and this complex deepened as a result of her guilt from feeling the slightest hint of joy after her sister's horn was severed, leading her to aim for becoming a perfect servant to atone for what she felt she had robbed from Ram.[10] This also leads her to understand others who have a similar complex, like Frederica Baumann has about her teeth.[11] Burdened by a sense of atonement toward Ram, she overworks herself, doing things in a way she believes her sister would.
Despite what happened to her village, though she was saddened by their deaths, she harbored little sorrow for the deaths of her kinsmen, having been grateful that she still had her sister,[12] and the only reason she initially agreed to take revenge with Ram was for Ram's sake rather than her own. During her time at Roswaal Manor, though her sense of inferiority and guilt never diminished, she felt more fulfilled than she ever did in her village, which weighed heavily on her conscience, as she was aware the only reason this was the case was because her kinsmen were killed.[13][14] Simultaneously, her anger and attachment toward getting the revenge that her sister desired also diminished, as she was becoming happier while living at the manor.[15] That being said, her sense of hatred will resurge when put into said environment. Because of this incident, she has a deep sense of hatred for the Witch Cult and believes that nothing good can come from the Witch’s scent, and upon smelling it in her youth, she became quick to act, vengeful, and highly aggressive, to the point that she was willing to torture a man to death to draw out information about his co-conspirators.[16] Even in the present day, that loathing led her to suspect, torture, and even kill Subaru on one occasion, as she suspected him to be a member of the Witch Cult because of his strange behavior and the scent wafting from him.
Thanks to the assistance of Subaru, Rem’s narrow worldview began to expand. No longer thinking of herself as her sister’s substitute, she started developing stronger bonds with the people around her. Rem felt grateful to Subaru for helping her move forward and developed a deep love for him, becoming one of his most loyal followers, to the point that she always believes in him as her "hero" no matter what, even if Subaru himself for some reason loses faith in his abilities, thereby serving him as an important emotional support even when she is not around, though she still maintains a low opinion of herself and can fall back into self-deprecation when comparing herself to Ram. It is because of this that she started to understand Garfiel Tinzel's behavior when he was around her sister, which she at first did not understand. After her confession, she becomes more open and honest about her feelings for Subaru. She boldly declares her love to the people around her. Her heart opened in a true sense, and she diminished the emotional restrictions she once had. Likewise, Rem displays great protectiveness, healing and defending Crusch against Regulus and Lye, two Sin Archbishops, even though her loss was certain.
After having awoken from her year and a half slumber, Rem acquired amnesia which left her in a state similar to that of Crusch at the end of Arc 3. In this state, rather than referring to herself by her name as she had before, she referred herself with I or my (私, watashi), and she tended to refer to Subaru as that person (あの人, ano hito). She was very wary of everyone, especially Subaru, even going as far as trying to strangle him twice and set up decoy paths and traps in order to get away from him, as she considered him dangerous due to a combination of the overwhelming Witch's Scent seeping from him after his numerous deaths, as well as his resentment for Spica and refusal to help her in her current state, as Rem saw her as just an innocent child.
After some time, she became less wary of those around her, and she came to accept her name as her own, despite initially not feeling as though it was. She often showed kindness to people like Katya Aurélie, acting similarly to how Subaru was to her as Katya tried to push her away, and she has shown to similar fondness to Ram as she used to. Thanks to Subaru's influence, she became willing to take gambles during times when her situation was uncertain,[17] including taking irrational options when provided with rational options,[18] and thanks to Priscilla Barielle, her sense of self became stronger. Though she still acts particularly harsh towards Subaru, she has also shown her protective side as well, going out of her way to attack Todd when he was in danger, as well as a slightly envious side, which she displayed numerous times when he interacted with Emilia. She has shown to dislike how he takes on burdens by himself, and she still feels guilt about the way she acted around him, to the point that she feels she must make up for it before she can truly apologize.[19]
History
The Oni Sisters of the Hidden Village
Rem lived with her father, mother, and her elder sister Ram in an oni village. Initially, because they were born with one horn each, it meant they were defective in the view of the Oni community, who believe in individual strength above all else, and were despised for it. They were to be killed as part of the custom of Oni to protect their pride as the strongest of the demi-humans. However, just before the execution, Ram displayed the potential of her power to protect them both, which shocked the community and caused them to kneel. Being allowed to live thanks to her older sister, who had an aptitude that had not been seen since the era of Witches, Rem spent the rest of her days in her shadow. Despite the presence of her sister also raising expectations for herself in the community, she could never meet them or surpass her sister in any area, which earned her disappointment from the other villagers. However, Rem loved her sister and accepted her place behind her and her parents still cared for them both deeply, even if she herself found it difficult to believe in front of the brilliance of her older sister.
One day, Rem awoke and panicked when she saw that her sister was not with her. Deciding to go and find her, she left her house, meeting her neighbor, who showed her concern and called Ram’s name with an honorific. Her heart slightly hurt, Rem raced off and eventually found Ram, who reassured Rem. Afterward, Ram felt a visitor had approached the village and went to confront him. Meeting an old giant who claimed to know and wanted to meet with Setanta, Ram, who was wary of him, took him to meet the chief. After meeting with him, Setanta introduced the man as Cromwell, though the giant claimed he now went by Rom. Though Setanta ordered Rem to go home and Ram to stay behind, Ram harshly refused and left with Rem, leaving Setanta and Rom to talk to each other. Though Rem was concerned if Ram was okay to do that, Ram reassured her, and after using her magic to deal with a chore, the two went to play and collect yams for steamed potatoes, and Rem forgot Ram’s serious expression as she pondered the meaning of the meeting. When they returned to the village, they came across an angry Setanta and Rom, who had apparently declined Setanta’s request. With Rom leaving and telling Setanta not to treat Ram as a kid only when it was convenient, he left the village, telling the girls to be good sisters.
Sometime later, Rem awoke to find that Ram was missing. Deciding to find her, after burning her hand on the doorknob, she realized her house was on fire, and she bust down the door to find Ram. She eventually made it outside, only to find the village ablaze and littered with oni corpses, including her parents and neighbor. She also bore witness as Setanta fought off strange, robed men until he was eventually killed. When the men decided to kill Rem, Ram appeared, slaughtering the men. However, as an explosion threatened to kill Rem, Ram grabbed her and leapt away. Taking injuries as she continued fighting, she was eventually faced with one of the men, who prepared to kill them. As he swung, Ram stood in front of Rem to protect her, and her horn was severed. Rem passed out from the shock. Ram, despite her injuries, managed to grab Rem and run, escaping the men. However, they eventually collapsed on the mountain road, where Roswaal L. Mathers discovered them on the way to their village. Upon meeting Ram, who asked to save Rem, Roswaal asked what she could offer him, to which she offered herself, saying that she couldn't make decisions for Rem.
When Rem next awoke, she was in Roswaal Manor, and Ram, whose face was pale, was next to her. Recalling what happened to the village, she was despondent. Then, a maid, Frederica Baumann, appeared in the room to retrieve Ram, introducing herself and slightly startling Rem with her teeth, which made them both feel guilty. As Frederica scolded Ram and mentioned her broken horn, the memories of what happened at the end of the attack on the oni village ran through Rem's mind, and in her panic, her horn protruded from her head and she thrashed around, forcing Ram and Frederica to hold her down. After Ram bit down on her horn and made her pass out, Ram passed out beside her, leaving the indignant Frederica to deal with the mess. Later, Rem woke up, and Ram wasn't beside her. Instead, Roswaal was, and he bluntly told her that everyone had died, picking at her emotional scars and at her bond with Ram, frustrating her to the point that she snapped at Roswaal, which was his goal, to make her more responsive. Afterward, she demanded to see her sister, and though Roswaal stated that it would not be good for either of them, he ultimately allowed her to see Ram, and Frederica led her to Ram's room, who claimed that Roswaal wasn't a bad person despite the way he speaks.
Upon arriving at Ram's room, she was surprised to see it covered in numerous locks and a magic circle, which Frederica unlocked. Despite Rem's instincts urging her to back away, she entered the room, only to see Ram writhing in pain as her mana was running wild and locked down to the bed. After being told that Ram had been holding this in until after she saw Rem was okay, Rem ran back to her room, where she begged Roswaal to save Ram. Like with Ram, he asked what Rem could offer him in return, to which she offered herself. Pleased with her response, he muttered that taking the sizes for the maid outfits should be left to Clind, and he went to deal with Ram's rampaging mana. Later, when Ram awoke, she and Rem spoke, with Rem revealing that she offered herself to serve Roswaal. Ram, who realized that they were being toyed with, explained that she did the same for Rem, making Rem happy. Afterward, the two embraced, and with Ram claiming that the men who destroyed their village got away, she decided to claim retribution on them, and Rem, who wasn't particularly sorrowful about the destruction of their village, agreed.
Later, Clind prepared maid outfits for Ram and Rem. Ram notes how there are almost exclusively demi-humans working for Roswaal, to which Frederica explained that Roswaal took in demi-humans with nowhere to go, and he gave them a job and an education without asking for anything in return. They notice how it was different for Rem and Ram, which Frederica suspects is because the sisters would have rushed out of the manor otherwise, which Ram could not refute. Over the following month, the two were taught by Frederica and Clind how to speak and act as a servant and a basic education. However, it is also discovered that the loss of Ram's horn interfered with Ram's work. The need for retribution within Rem also began to wane, and one day, she spoke with Roswaal about her life in the manor, and the weight of her conscience about living there. The conversation moved to how Rem noticed the Witch Cult was responsible for the village's destruction, which Roswaal unintentionally confirmed. Roswaal discouraged her from vengeance, and Rem said she would speak to Ram about it. When Ram appeared for Rem, the two left the room, and Ram noticed her formal speech, and the two spoke about their relationship with Roswaal. As they walked, however, Rem got lost in her thoughts, and when Ram called out to her, she spoke formally again, something which worried Ram.
Another month passed, and in the time the two were at the manor, she had seen numerous servants go to work at other mansions once they were confirmed to have received satisfactory education. One day, Roswaal prepared to set off for the Sanctuary, intent on bringing Ram with him. Soon after, after convincing the two it was for their own good to be separated, he and Ram left for the Sanctuary, Frederica giving a letter to Ram to give to her brother, Garfiel. The next day, Clind tasked her with cleaning the basement on Roswaal's orders, and he left. Having to take the other servants to take on new posts, Frederica also left, leaving Rem behind at the manor alone. With the key to the basement, she made her way there, where she noticed a horrid but familiar stench. Led by her nose, she found herself in front of a sealed door, and despite her caution, when she heard the clicking that she heard the night her village was destroyed, she busted through the door and came face to face with one of the men responsible for attacking that night, Fogg, and he set off an explosion and sent her flying. Despite receiving a heavy blow, Rem was able to stand back up and keep fighting, getting hit by numerous explosions. Noticing that their bad scent appeared before the explosions, she used that to avoid the worst damage, and she assaulted her enemy. Eventually, she grabbed a magic stone and tossed it towards one of the man's explosive traps, setting it off. She attacked once again, but he set off all of the explosions, destroying the room. Protected by a collapsing shelf, the man managed to escape the room, only for Rem, now holding her morningstar, to appear behind him and take off his arm. Hitting him numerous times, she decided to use healing magic, which she used instinctively, on him, torturing him for his name, Fogg, and the names of his comrades, Sergei, Sado, and Faust. Then when she killed him, she passed out. She was later found by Clind, beaten and bloody, and he took her to her room. When Roswaal and Ram returned, Ram stuck by Rem's side, and when she later awoke, she spoke with Roswaal, claiming that she would act as Ram's horn and substitute.
Another month later, Roswaal, Frederica, Ram, and Rem visited the Royal Capital, which was celebrating the Tammuz Festival, to buy a gift to celebrate the birth of child of House Miload. Deciding to split up to search for a gift, Roswaal took Ram with him while Frederica took Rem, and the two decided to meet up again later. As the two looked at the stores, Frederica asked about the kinds of gifts that Rem and Ram would give to each other, setting off Rem to go and buy a gift for Ram now that she had the chance. However, Frederica stopped her, and having been inspired by Rem's answers and responses, they looked through various shops. Eventually, however, Rem's nose caught a whiff of the same scent that came off of Fogg, and she followed it, leading to a bag containing a magical miasma stone. Deciding to reunite with Roswaal and Ram, the former of which had bought gifts for the latter, they discussed the possible plans that the Witch Cult were scheming. Deciding to split again, Roswaal and Ram went to alert the capital's guardsmen while Frederica beastified and took Rem with her to look for the scattered stones, which Ram had predicted the locations of.
After dealing with the stones, the two came across Sado, the man planting them. Having been prepared to escape at a moment's notice, he dodged Rem's morningstar, which she had been training with, and summoned other Witch Cultists to hold them off while he flew away. Although the two were cornered and were nearly forced to retreat, much to Rem's outrage due to knowing that she would never come across the man again, a young Reinhard van Astrea appeared and offered to hold off the remaining Witch Cultists, allowing for Frederica and Rem to chase after Sado. However, as the two approached more heavily populated areas and Sado was off in the distance, the two were forced to stop. However, thanks to her Clairvoyance and Synesthesia, Ram was able to see through Rem's eyes, and using her new wand fashioned from her horn and gifted to her by Roswaal, she used her magic to sever Sado's limbs from afar, effectively defeating him. Rem and Frederica chased after Sado. After meeting him, Rem attempted to question him, but the man merely said that he pitied her and gave his name before he died, giving her no answers and frustrating her. Afterward, Reinhard appeared, having successfully captured all of the Witch Cultists alive, and after deciding to preserve the scene to allow Frederica to revert back and clothe herself, she and Rem left, with the intent to explain things to the guards. As they left, Rem solidified her resolve before mentioning they would have to find a gift for House Miload now.
Ten days later, Roswaal brought Rem and Ram to the Miload Manor, where they met the pregnant Grace Miload, Roswaal's excuse for bringing them being that they ought to see childbirth for themselves, and his continued interactions with Grace made Ram grumpy. After a short conversation, Rem and Ram went to another room, where, after a different conversation about being unable to kill time and how Rem did so in the village, interacted with the servants of the manor. Three days later, Dudley Miload was late in returning to the manor, and when a young man arrived to tell everyone that the carriage broke down, Roswaal and Rem went to retrieve him, leaving Ram to keep Grace company. After arriving at his carriage, the young man brought Rem forward to witness the bloody corpses. When she brought out her horn, she was nearly incapacitated by the man's poisoning of mana. When the man blew away the carriage Roswaal was in, the young man, Sergei, summoned several Witch Cultists before attempting to strangle Rem to death, only for Roswaal to appear and blast them all with magic and retrieve Rem. Deciding to handle them, Roswaal sent Rem back to the manor, blowing away the cultists that got in her way. When she eventually returned to the manor, which was under attack, she found Faust, the last of the men who attacked her village, grabbing Ram by the throat, intending to throw her into the explosive traps set in the garden. Seeing this, Rem hit him in the head with her morningstar. With Ram on her back, the two avoided the explosions that followed them, and Rem struck him. When he attempted a sneak attack, she managed to counter him, breaking his weapon with her teeth, and she struck him numerous times while piercing through the upper floors. After pushing through the roof, Rem struck the man and sent him flying into the explosive traps, and when Ram threw his burning leaf tobacco into it, they went off, reducing the man to ash.
Later, Roswaal returned, having killed the Witch Cultists and brought Sergei back for the twins to kill. Afterward, Limrear appeared, saying that the baby had been born but that Grace didn't have much time left. In the room she was in, several bloody rags were nearby, and the baby was in the arms of a servant. Waking Grace, she gave her baby the name Annerose, and she asked Roswaal to take care of her. Dying, she said that she loved Roswaal, and she laughed when he returned her words, saying he was a bad liar. In the end, she died, leaving the servants to cry. After this, Roswaal became Annerose's guardian, and House Miload was put under his control. Many of the remaining servants who survived resigned, and Roswaal decided to have Clind and Frederica serve at House Miload, with Roswaal choosing to have his hobby of taking care of and training demi-human servants being performed at the Miload Manor and by those two. A year later, Rem and Ram visited the Oni village's grave and performed their funeral rites with alcohol given to them by Roswaal.
Garfiel and Ram's Really Complicated Love Affair
One day later on, intending to let her see the "White Snow Sakura", Ram brought Rem to the Sanctuary. After Rem went to speak to Ryuzu, Ram spoke with Garfiel about why she was there without Roswaal. When Rem returned, she sent Garfiel flying away and started talking with Ram. After Garfiel quickly recovered, he and Rem started to argue, and the sisters playfully complained about Garfiel finding out about what they were there for. Ram worried about how Rem rarely got to act herself, though their worry made her dismiss the thought. Eventually, the arrived at their destination, and the twins were mesmerized by the sight of the trees covered in white flowers. They eventually sat down to eat, and after a moment, Garfiel passed out of Ram's shoulder. After learning from Rem that Rem and Garfiel had actually worked together to bring Ram here, she moved his head to her lap and ran her hand through his hair in gratitude. After a few moments, however, she moved Garfiel so that the jealous Rem could lay her head on her lap instead.
Rem Meets Subaru
Following his victory against Elsa Granhiert, it was decided that Natsuki Subaru would be brought back to Roswaal Manor to be treated. Rem, who was responsible for his treatment, expressed doubt at his presence, as his features were strange, and his purpose was unknown. It is unclear if she noticed the scent of the Witch on him. Later, she went to inform Beatrice of the situation with their injured guest.
Emilia's Starry Sky Classroom
Shortly after his arrival at the manor, Emilia, while walking towards the garden, met with Rem. She mentioned that she needed to go to the garden to talk with the spirits since the commotion Subaru made interrupted her last attempt. Rem offered to "deal" with Subaru and asked if she should not say where Emilia went if she found Subaru. Emilia replies that such action was not needed and said that Rem could tell him where she went if he asked.
Rem's Latte Art
During one of the days immediately after Subaru was brought to the manor, Rem found him playing with coff. After he told Rem that what he was doing, latte art, was something that came from his homeland, he explained that he used fire stones to make the milk foam and showed her that he could draw Puck in it with milk. After being convinced by Subaru to try, Rem tried, but her drawing was bad, and in her frustration, she ordered Subaru to get back to work. A little while later, Ram found her alone in the dining room still attempting to draw something good. Ram picked up one of the cups and drew the characters for "older sister" in Japanese that she had learned from Subaru the night before. Rem was amazed that her sister can be so incredible, getting sad that she had failed. After Ram left, Rem tasted the coff, which was bad, and she decided to teach Subaru how to brew it properly first before playing with it next time.
Ram's Older Sister Heart is Complicated
After the Wolgarm Incident, Rem started to become very attached to Subaru, something which began to disturb Ram and make her treat Subaru harshly. A short while later, after Ram had overworked herself and Subaru helped to take care of her, Rem visited after finishing her chores and noticed that Ram slept while holding Subaru's hand, saying that this rare scene must be because she finally accepted Subaru, with Subaru replying that he wasn't so sure since she had insulted him from the beginning to the very last minute until she asked to hold hands before sleeping.
The Best Day of Rem's Life
A week after the Wolgarm Incident, Rem met up with Subaru, and she was going to act on the promise she made with him to cut his hair. Though nervous, she felt honored to be able to do so.
Rem's Maiden Heart is Super Complex
A little while later, Rem discovered Subaru sleeping in the garden and slacking off instead of doing housework. Quickly performing the rest of her tasks, Rem eventually grabbed a chair so that she could rest near Subaru and watch his sleeping face.
The Head Maid's Unrestful Holiday
Noticing how hard Rem worked, Subaru spoke with the other residents of Roswaal Manor, and he proposed that she take a day off. Despite the slight opposition of the others, he was able to persuade them to agree after saying that she could use the day off to think about what she wanted as her reward for her participation in the Wolgarm Incident, and when Rem herself was reluctant to take a day off, Subaru told her to take the day off directly, and she agreed to his command immediately. Afterward, everyone decided on which jobs they would handle to make up for not having Rem’s help and split up to handle their respective tasks.
Despite the time off, Rem became anxious at essentially doing nothing, and deciding to check in on everyone, she snuck out of her room. Particularly concerned about her sister, Rem arrived at the kitchen, where she overheard Ram complaining to Roswaal about Subaru’s idea to have him participate in the housework. However, Roswaal was fine participating and even claimed that Subaru’s idea wasn’t misguided. As Rem decided to leave, she noticed Roswaal had noticed her and quietly thanked him for not saying anything. Next, she went to the bath, where she expected Puck and Beatrice to be doing the laundry. Concerned due to the number of unique outfits that shouldn’t be cleaned together and worried about whether or not they could properly handle the fabric, she rushed to handle those herself. When she got there, however, she found Puck instructing Beatrice how to deal with clothes while cleaning his own load with magic. Overhearing their discussion about the tedium and necessity of doing laundry and coming to an understanding about why Subaru wanted to give Rem a day off, Rem walked away, grateful to them. Deciding to check up on Subaru and Emilia, who were dusting the west wing, she overheard as they spoke about how clean it was already and about Emilia recalling her misunderstanding shortly after arriving at the manor. Shortly after, Subaru recalled an important task he needed to do and headed for the front gate, leaving Emilia to finish her tasks. Realizing what his intentions were, Rem met Subaru in front of the gate, intent on going with him to check Arlam Village’s barrier. On the way to the village, Subaru asked if his actions that morning had bothered her, and though she teased him about it, she was grateful to him for giving her the chance to hear everyone’s opinions of her, and she thanked him. The next morning, as she cared for Ram, she noticed that Rem was rather happy, which she attributed to her day off. After greeting Subaru when he awoke and some small banter, when he asked if she had an idea for her reward, she claimed she already got it, which she believed was everything that happened the day prior.
Beatrice and Rem's Cumbersome Cleaning
One day, Rem entered the forbidden library and witnessed Beatrice holding a bucket over her head. Beatrice, having noticed her, was surprised by her arrival. Though Rem said to Beatrice to give her best as Emilia had improved her singing with this method, Beatrice angrily denied this and claimed that she only had the bucket to clean the library, to which Rem had been aware that there was no water in it. Taking the opportunity to clean the library, Rem taught Beatrice how to do so properly. Wanting to participate instead of only listen, Beatrice asked to join her. However, because her attempt to clean a bookshelf led to the destruction of one of the books, Rem scolded her, with Beatrice pouting that her being treated in such a way was Subaru's fault.
Beatrice and Rem's Cumbersome Service
A short while later, Beatrice was spooked when Rem entered the library with an angry expression. Checking the bookshelves, she noticed that they were still full of dust, and she proceeded to scold Beatrice harshly for not being able to clean her own library properly. After a while, Rem revealed that her true purpose in coming was not to check on the cleanliness of the library but to ask Beatrice for a favor. She wished to create a dish, specially made for Subaru just as Ram and Emilia had done in the past, since last time she felt quite left out, and she mentioned that Beatrice had a similar taste in food as Subaru did. Though Beatrice was initially unwilling to cooperate since, in the end, it would be something to please Subaru, the smell of the food and Rem's persuasion made her start tasting and rating every dish Rem presented to her. A few days later, Rem was pleased by the results of her efforts, having not told Subaru about Beatrice's help.
Some Like it Cold
One morning, Subaru awakened in his room from a bad dream and was astonished by Rem's presence, her reason for being there being in his room was because she was restoring her energy by watching over him. When Rem asked about his dream, he confessed that it was really a nightmare and refused to talk about it as it could have come true if he did. Getting out of bed, Subaru noticed that the temperature in the room was rather cold. Rem confirmed that it was cold most likely due to the weather and complimented Subaru's astute insight, whereas he downplayed it. In the mansion's kitchen, Subaru peeled potatoes while Rem tended to the cooking. As they worked on their respective tasks, Subaru mentioned that the cold weather was strange and asked about Rem's inadequate clothing. While Rem did have more appropriate clothing for the winter, she claimed that she and her sister were fine with the cold weather. At the same time, she mentioned that Ram was sleeping in late due to the cold, which caused Subaru to snap as Rem's statement contradicted her prior one and went off to give Ram a piece of his mind.
The next day, Subaru performed mopping duties with Rem in the foyer. They talked about how the date with Emilia was not canceled but postponed due to the frigid weather, something that seemed to have left her relieved. Reflecting on this, Subaru noted how Emilia's relieved expression bugged him. Rem then noted that it was a wise choice for Subaru to cancel the date, as they could have become stranded in a mountain because of the weather. Initially, Subaru agreed with this, but then gets an epiphany how the two of them stranded in the mountains in a cabin would be a perfect romantic experience. However, Subaru downplayed that scenario ever occurring as a snowstorm would never happen. At that moment, however, Subaru accidentally broke his mop that was somehow stuck in the mop's water, which had been frozen over.
The following day, after waking up to a frozen room, Subaru was served by Rem in the kitchen area. Soon after, Roswaal appeared and noted the ineptness of how Subaru was unable to deal with the cold. As the conversation continued, Roswaal revealed that the cold weather was only affecting the area in the manor's vicinity. Furthermore, there were already people investigating the issue. The three then headed to Emilia's room, where they discovered that the cause of the weather was because of Puck. A meeting was then held in the dining room, where it was explained that the cause for the cold weather was because of Puck's magical release period. Due to Subaru's ignorance of the concept of Od, Beatrice elucidated the subject to him. When asked about the sudden surge in cold weather, Puck answered that it was due to the fact that he figured he could get away with upping the magical exertion. After formally apologizing to Subaru, Emilia asked Puck how much longer this cold weather will last. Puck answered that it would be another two days before it ended. Emilia also revealed that due to having a contract with Puck, she had become immune to cold temperatures. Though Subaru attempts to come up with ideas to order to pass the cold, each of his ideas was refuted.
Back in the dining room, Subaru and Ram huddled by the fireplace. When Roswaal and Beatrice were asked about how they dealt with their surplus of Od, they revealed their respective methods. It is also revealed that Rem doesn't have enough magical energy the needed to have a magic release period, while Emilia maintained hers quite easily thanks to Puck. Subaru then asked when the last time Puck used his energy to his heart's content, which Puck claimed was during the fights with Elsa and Roswaal months prior, something of which Roswaal and Puck reminisced on. Sometime later, Subaru, Rem, and Emilia left to collect firewood. During this, Subaru comes up with the idea to hold a snow festival to help squander Puck's abundance of mana, something that was inspired by Hokkaido in Japan.
The next day, Subaru explains to the residents of Arlam Village and the manor that whoever manages to create the best snow sculpture would be rewarded with a prize, something which leads to everyone working on their respective sculptures, and the judges turn out to be Subaru, Roswaal, and Rasphum. As Subaru and Roswaal observe the sculptures, Subaru eventually came to Rem and Ram, whose sculpture was hidden behind a curtain. When they reveal their sculpture, it turned out to be what they called the Wonderful Subuwaal-sama Sculpture, a sculpture with characteristics of both Subaru and Roswaal. When Roswaal walked up and saw the sculpture, he was left despondent, and the low ratings given by the two judges flabbergasted the twins, leading them to discuss what went wrong with it. In the end, the winner was Petra Leyte.
Alcohol Panic
Two nights after Subaru had found a stash of alcohol beneath the manor, the residents of the manor held a party. After a speech from Subaru, everyone partook from the food and alcohol available. During the banquet, Emilia and Rem both got drunk, Rem in particular becoming drunk off of the mere smell of the alcohol without having drunk any, attached themselves to Subaru, and teased him until they both fell asleep on his lap. Seeing Beatrice by her lonesome outside on the balcony, Subaru decided to join her. Before he made it to her, Subaru's gaze had landed on Emilia and Rem, who were embracing one another while asleep.
Rem's Very Ordinary Happy Day
One morning, a month after Subaru’s arrival at the manor, Rem set about her daily routine of watching Subaru’s sleeping face for a while and waking her sister. During her conversation with Ram, she muttered about whether she should grow out her hair, which Ram pointed out was because Emilia’s hair was long, implying it was for her to grab Subaru’s attention. Despite her grumbling about Subaru not being worthy of Rem, Rem was happy that Ram did not dislike Subaru. Later that morning, as she watched Subaru and Emilia in the garden, Beatrice appeared nearby and started speaking with Rem, having been keeping an eye on her to make sure she did not overwork herself with the excuse that she did not want to be dragged into another one of Subaru’s ideas. The two discussed how his presence changed the twins and Beatrice, and as Beatrice left for the Forbidden Library, Rem stated she would call for her when breakfast was ready, something that Beatrice started to participate in over the past month.
That afternoon, having sent Subaru and Ram to Arlam Village to shop in an effort for them to become better friends, Rem brought Emilia her tea. When Emilia invited her to sit with her, though at first Rem was quiet and didn’t know what to talk about, they began to talk about how they had to learn a lot due to their circumstances. With Rem thinking about how she had never tried to interact with Emilia, the two started to talk about what they had learned about each other in the past month, and having come to the conclusion that a lot had changed thanks to Subaru’s appearance, Rem claimed that she hoped Emilia would win the Royal Selection, and she would help however she could.
Later that night, Rem was summoned by Roswaal and Puck, who requested snacks for their drinks. After she prepared the snacks, she was invited by the two to keep them company. After some small talk about their handling of alcohol and the night of the stargazing party, they began speaking about Subaru’s gate, which had been damaged during the Wolgarm Incident. Intent on bringing the best healer in the capital, Ferris, he had discussed with Puck about using something from within Elior Forest, the magic stones, to bargain with Ferris, who was already a critical part of House Karsten and the Crusch Camp. After assigning Rem the task of keeping a close eye on Subaru, she left, having been slightly affected by the smell of the alcohol. Visiting Subaru’s room, something that was a part of her routine as to glimpse his sleeping face, she got up close to him, close enough that she could feel his breath. However, as she considered giving in to her impulses, she pulled herself back, having sobered up. Despite thinking to leave the room, she found herself placing a finger on his lips, which closed around it. After a struggle with her impulses again, she then found herself wrapped in the sleeping Subaru’s arms, which, after some more struggles, she accepted, and she fell asleep. The next morning, Ram found the two like this and gave Subaru a thrashing.
Abilities
Overall Power
Rem's strength is such that she could easily hunt down and slay witchbeasts without coming to harm, and against average opponents, she is likely to win. It has been said that she is even capable of going toe to toe with a Guiltylowe. However, her strength is limited, and she can easily be overwhelmed by superior opponents or greater numbers of experienced fighters. This being said, what makes her the most dangerous is that, even in spite disadvantages against her, she has the will to keep fighting in spite of any injuries she may receive, and she will bring down as many enemies as she can with her before she falls.
Physical Traits/Flow Method
Enhanced Strength: As an oni, Rem's physical strength is greater than the average person. It allows her to swing around a heavy morningstar with ease.
Rem in her oni mode.
Horn: As she is an oni, Rem can enter her oni form, manifesting a single white horn on her forehead. In this state, her physical capabilities are enhanced further. As a twin, however, Rem was born with a single horn that appeared smaller than an average oni's, meaning her power in her oni state was lower than her kin's.
- Further Enhanced Strength: With her horn manifested, she is capable of killing witchbeasts with her bare fists and showed no strain in carrying Subaru. Even as a child, she was capable of crushing the heads of fully grown men by slamming the hilt of her weapon into them or shatter a knife with a bite.[20][21]
- Blade-like Nails: While enhanced by her horn, her nails become sharp enough that they can easily rend through flesh.[22]
- Limited Regeneration: While her horn protrudes from her head, her body's regenerative capabilities are increased.[23] Although not absolute or perfect, it can prevent her from racking up too many wounds at once. Combined with her healing magic, she can avoid fatal attacks much easier.
- Increased Ferocity: Manifesting her horn is a double-edged sword due to its traits of enhancing Rem's ferocity. She enters an adrenaline-like state in which she can keep fighting and killing her enemies, but if she is not careful, she could lose herself to her instincts and try to kill everything in sight. Furthermore, if she overexerts herself while her horn is manifested, it is likely that the recoil would render her weak.
- Horn Substitution: Being Ram’s twin, Rem can temporarily act as her horn and give her access to more of her power. However, doing so interferes with her body’s internal mana circulation, which once made it difficult for her to use her legs for months.
- Heightened Mana Sensitivity: During the events of Arc 9, with her horn protruding from her head and absorbing mana, Rem's sensitivity to changes in it became heightened. During her battle with Yae Tenzen, she realized her potential with this and had become capable of sensing intent through the emotional changes that are hidden in mana, allowing Rem to defend or act appropriately when in the face of unexpected or unseen attacks. The greater her opponent's bloodlust, the more sensitive she was to it, allowing her to react quicker. This also allowed her to determine the intent of her allies by perceiving their mana, allowing her to react appropriately even without words. Since Subaru has changed the events leading to this ability's awakening, she does not retain this ability.
Miasma-Attuned Olfaction: Rem can smell the miasma that wafts from sources such as Witch Cultists and magical miasma stones, as well as the Witch's Scent that stems from Subaru's connection to Satella, something that only a few individuals in the series so far, are capable of doing. It is currently unknown how Rem is capable of doing this, though it most likely stems from the night her village was attacked and destroyed by the Witch Cult, as prior to that event, Rem never displayed such an ability. It is revealed by Echidna in Re:IF Kasaneru that this is a natural ability of the Oni Tribe as well as their purpose for existing despite the fact that her sister does not appear to possess this power.
Magic
Rem has an affinity for the water attribute, and though not to the extent of Aldebaran with his earth magic or Emilia with her ice-based fire magic, Rem is rather creative in how she uses her magic. Roswaal, who taught her how to use it, estimates her skills being above average but nothing exceptional. She is able to attack and heal using her magic, and according to Puck, she has a habit of using her magic with wild and reckless abandon.[24]
Spells:
- Healing Magic (治癒魔法, Chiyu Mahō): Rem summons water mana to heal the wounds of herself and others. However, while she is skilled in treating external injuries, she is not so skilled at treating internal injuries, including the healing of the Gate.[25]
- Huma (ヒューマ): Rem creates a shining water barrier that blocks other projectiles and sorts of magic. However, if the incoming magic is stronger than the shield, it will get through it and cause damage to the user. She can also shape her ice in any manner she needs to, similar to how Aldebaran uses his earth magic, such as creating midair platforms, wrapping ice around her neck for defense, or creating layers of ice to increase the weight and power of her morningstar.
- El Huma (エル・ヒューマ): Rem forms and shoots multitudes of ice spears which easily pierces through and crushes flesh that vanish a moment afterwards. She is also able to freeze liquid such as blood, effectively creating deadly spikes out of her enemies' blood, impaling unsuspecting foes.
- Ul Huma (ウル・ヒューマ): Rem materializes and shoots three pillars of ice, each as thick as a hundred spears bundled together.
- Al Huma (アル・ヒューマ): Rem creates a sharp ten-meter-long spear of ice.
Techniques
Rem receiving a warning from Ram, through Synesthesia.
Synesthesia (共感覚, Kyōkankaku): An ability that she shares with her sister. It allows them to share their feelings with each other, something which can allow them to alert the other of possible danger.[26] If Ram is in intense danger, such as being on the verge of death, Rem will feel those feelings as well, something which will make her feel pain and pant, such as in one failed loop. This ability also allows the two to sense each other over larger distances, albeit vaguely. Most importantly, however, this allows Rem to share Ram's burden when she needs to access more of her power, essentially allowing her to act as Ram's "horn". This being said, the one time this was shown to happen, Rem was unable to use her legs properly, as her internal mana circulation had been greatly disturbed.
Equipment
- Morningstar (モーニングスター, Mōningusutā): Rem wields a giant metal spiked ball on long metal chains called a morningstar. Rem is easily capable of causing significant damage to her target with it, whether that be tearing limbs from a person's body or even smashing their heads into paste. She can also use the chains for defense, using them to help deflect attacks. Even after she fell asleep for more than a year, Subaru kept her morningstar polished and clean to ensure it did not become damaged.
- Walking Stick: During the events of Arc 7, due to the complications with her legs throughout the arc, Rem was forced to use a long cane-like walking stick whenever she walked. She eventually stopped using it once she was able to walk on her own.
- Sword: For a short period during Arc 7, Rem used a sword in place of her walking stick and to defend herself from enemies. However, the sword was ultimately discarded.
